What is general waste - and what happens to it?
General waste covers the non-recyclable or mixed residual waste that every business produces – the material left over after recyclable streams have been separated. At RiverRidge, general waste collected across Northern Ireland is never simply sent to landfill. Every load passes through our own processing lines, where recyclable materials are extracted and diverted back into the circular economy. The remaining residual material is processed into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), which is used to generate power at Full Circle Generation – Northern Ireland’s only Energy from Waste facility. Your general waste doesn’t go to ground. It goes back to work.
What's in your general waste?
General waste relates to co-mingled waste containing no hazardous materials. At a household level this would be akin to your black bin waste. A large proportion of recyclable materials may end up included, but with our specialised treatment process RiverRidge will be able to separate these materials and return them to productive use.

RiverRidge operates Northern Ireland’s first electric skip lift vehicle and runs a fleet of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) vehicles, reducing transport emissions by 90% versus diesel.
